Hawes Auction Mart this morning to meet with farmers. The auction mart here is 100 years old and renown for its September sales of North of England Mule sheep.
I spent the day meeting businesses in Hawes: from the large Wensleydale Creamery to small shopkeepers, I spoke to busineses about what they need to keep growing.
I spent the morning at an engaging conference organised by Richmondshire District Council and the Yorkshire Post at Tenants Auction House in Leyburn. The theme was about how to keep young families in rural areas.
In some respects we are very aware of where our food comes from as we see sheep and cows every time we drive anywhere in the area. But abattoirs are also a crucial part of the supply chain getting food on to our plates at home.
