Rishi has praised a small village store in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales proving to be a lifeline for its community.
Withywood Stores in West Witton, near Leyburn, was taken over by Philip and Lucy Payne in August this year.
The couple, who have moved to the area from Kent where they ran a similar business, set about revamping the store – the only shop in the Wensleydale village – and stocking local produce wherever possible.
Rishi called by to wish the couple well and see what progress they had made.
He said: “The stores play an important role in the community of the village and this part of Wensleydale. It is encouraging to see the investment the Paynes are making in the business and making it policy to use local producers wherever possible.”
Philip Payne said he and his wife were gratified by the support they had received from local people since taking over.
“More and more people are discovering the range of foods and other essentials that we are now stocking,” said Mr Payne. “We are looking out for more local products to sell as we develop what we offer.”
West Witton Parish Council chair Dave Brown said it was wonderful to see the village store well stocked and serving the community.
