Rishi Sunak has urged his constituents to shop locally this Christmas as he marked Small Business Saturday with visits to two independent retail businesses in Bedale.
Mr Sunak, MP for Richmond, called into Cockburn’s Butchers and the Red House vintage shop, both in the Market Place.
Mr Sunak, Minister for Local Government, was backing Small Business Saturday - on December 1 - which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.
Mr Sunak said: “These are both independent, family-run businesses offering a unique service to their customers. It’s really important for our High Streets that we support them.
“The Government is doing its bit in cutting business rates and providing a support package worth £1.5bn. But as individuals we can all make a contribution by using these businesses in the run-up to Christmas and then throughout the year. We can all do our bit to support our High Streets and the small businesses that give them their character.”
This year Small Business Saturday concides with Bedale Christmas Festival, Christmas market and lights switch-on at 5pm.
