Hambleton Foodshare has launched a mobile service to reach people who cannot get to its Northallerton home.
The charity, which is based at the Zion United Reform Church hall just off the town’s High Street, has recruited more volunteers to deliver food parcels, by arrangement, to even the most remote villages in the Hambleton district.
Margaret Brice, the project’s co-ordinator, said she was very aware that the drop-in open sessions held on Mondays in Northallerton were realistically limited to those living locally and no more than a short walk away.
She said: “I am really pleased that we can now offer help to people in need across the district through the great support of volunteers who have come forward to make this happen.”
Rishi Sunak, the MP for Richmond, was told about the new scheme when he recently visited the foodbank’s base, to meet the volunteers and the clients they help.
He said: “I was hugely impressed by the evident commitment of the volunteers and number – almost 100 – who are involved in some way.
“Hambleton Foodshare is doing tremendous work in helping people get back on their feet and I was delighted to learn about its work and thank the volunteers for their efforts.”
The new mobile service is one the project’s recent innovations. Last month, it opened a satellite scheme in Bedale.
