THE Yorkshire Post’s campaign for clearer labelling of diary produce has been supported by the Environment minister Liz Truss.
Responding to a question in the Commons from Richmond MP Rishi Sunak, Ms Truss said she wanted to see clear labelling of British dairy products.
Mr Sunak said British shoppers wanted to support British dairy farmers, but the current labelling of products was often too complicated to make that a reality.
He asked if the minister would support the Post’s “excellent campaign” for clear and unambiguous labelling of dairy products so that this Christmas we can all buy British with confidence.”
The minister described the Post’s campaign – Clearly British – as a great initiative and described Mr Sunak as “fantastic champion of Yorkshire farmers” adding “I want to see British labelling on British dairy products right across the country.
“I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Wensleydale Creamery in his constituency, in the newly expanded Yorkshire Dales national park, and I have been eating their Yorkshire yoghurt ever since.”
The Yorkshire Post campaign wants clear, unambiguous labelling to be extended to all dairy products, including cheese, butter and yoghurt. This way shoppers can easily identify which items that they buy will benefit British dairy farmers who caught up in their worst cash crisis for a generation.
It has been supported by Mr Sunak who earlier this year launched a ten-point plan to save the dairy industry. One of the ten points was better labelling of diary products.
