YOUNG people from across North Yorkshire had the opportunity to question two of the county’s MPs at a student leadership conference.
The student leaders from secondary schools attended the conference at County Hall, Northallerton, to find out about the political decision-making processes at local and national level.
Rishi Sunak, MP for Richmond, spoke to them about how he became an MP at last year’s General Election and Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate and Knaresborough, talked about his work as a Transport Minister.
Afterwards, both MPs took part in a question and answer session with the students.
Mr Sunak said: “It was great to talk to the young people about life in Westminster and how I became an MP. They had some really interesting questions about how Parliament works and issues like the voting age.”
Schools at the conference included Risedale College, Catterick Garrison, and St Francis Xavier School, Richmond.
During the rest of the on-day conference, the students learned how to effectively voice their own views and the views of others at their schools.
