Work will start early in 2024 on a ground-breaking £55m healthcare centre in Catterick Garrison to serve the military and civilian population of the UK’s biggest army base and Richmondshire.
The Catterick Integrated Care Campus is a joint project between the NHS and the Ministry of Defence – the first of its type.
Built on a site close to the camp centre roundabout, the campus will provide a wide range of primary care and community services.
Construction work is to start four months ahead of schedule after the expected approval of the business case for the investment.
The news has been welcomed by Rishi, who has supported campus from its inception and helped make the business case for the investment
He said: “The new campus will make a big difference to health care in the Garrison and the wider Richmondshire district, bringing many services closer to home for residents in Catterick and Colburn but also Richmond and the Dales area.
“It represents a major investment in local infrastructure, catering for the additional Service personnel coming to the Garrison and their families plus the new housing planned for the area.”
At the heart of the campus will be a three-storey E-shaped building 113m long. The 10-acre site will also include 169 staff and 229 visitor parking spaces, a linear park, community and sensory garden and arboretum.
The Garrison’s existing Harewood GP practice will move there and other services based in the building will include the out-of-hours GP cover, mental health, physiotherapy, paediatrics, audiology, ophthalmology, trauma and orthopaedic outpatients, diabetes support, heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation.
A number of community services will be based there as well, including district nursing, health visiting, palliative care and pharmacy.
Earlier this month, North Yorkshire councillors were briefed on the campus by Lisa Pope of the NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board.
She told members of the council’s Scrutiny of Health Committee that the campus was a transformational scheme between the NHS and MoD to deliver a range of integrated services for military and civilian residents of Catterick and the wider Richmondshire area.
She said: “The philosophy of the campus is to move away from fragmented and reactive care to holistic and preventative care which is truly person and family-centred.”
The new campus is expected to open in 2026.
