Rishi Sunak was honoured to switch on the festive lights at Bedale's Christmas Festival.
Hundreds of townsfolk gathered around the tree in the Market Place for mince pies, mulled wine, carols played by Bedale Brass Band and the switch on by the Richmond MP, ably assisted by the town's Mayor, Cllr Chistine Mollard and fellow town councillor Mandi Coates.
Before illuminating the tree, Mr Sunak praised the organisers of the event, the many attractions and the tremendous turnout. He urged those present to shop local this Christmas.
The MP and his family had earlier called at Bedale Hall to see the Christmas stalls and crafts, to judge the children's art competition and for the children to visit Santa.
He then judged the town's Christmas window competition. The winner was Floral Elegance, New Jersey was second and a special prize was awarded to Red House.
Mr Sunak said: "It was great day which my family and friends very much enjoyed. It was a great honour to turn on the lights and to see so many local there enjoying themselves and supporting local shops and businesses."
