A VILLAGE without a central point has celebrated the anniversary of a building which helps bring it together.
Kirkby Sigston is a tiny parish near Northallerton made up of widely dispersed farms and houses. It's church and village hall are almost a mile apart.
But villagers came together to mark the 10th anniversary of the village hall refurbishment with an open day which featured old pictures of the village and other memorabilia.
Visitors included Kirby Sigston resident Rishi Sunak, the MP for Richmond.
Robin Harker, chairman of the village hall committee, said the hall used to be a one-room school before becoming the village's community focus. It was refurbushed and updated with toilets, a kichen, double glazing and effective central heating in 2007. Mr Sunak's predecessor William Hague had performed the re-opening honours.
He said: "We are very proud of our hall – it's small but perfectly formed. All sorts of activities take place there – from domino drives to belly dancing classes."
Mr Sunak said: "As relatively new residents in Kirby Sigston it was fascinating to see the old photographs and other exhibits. The hall is a super community facility."
